City Restores Residential Weekly Recycling; Begins Week of April 3

COVINGTON, KY – Beginning the week of April 3, 2017, the City of Covington restores weekly recycling, providing a much needed service for its residents and further promoting its environmentally friendly initiatives to make Covington a cleaner and greener city.

Mayor Joseph U. Meyer stated, “I am pleased to announce that the City of Covington is returning to a weekly recycling schedule. We know how important it is for residents who currently recycle. We hope to encourage even more people to begin recycling.”

Provided to Covington residents at no additional cost, weekly recycling will be collected every week on the same day as trash collection.

Residents participating in the recycling program must place their recycling carts at the curb by 7 a.m. for pickup and adhere to recycling guidelines detailed on the lid of their recycling cart. Guidelines can also be found by clicking here.

In 2015, the City contracted with Rumpke, Inc. to provide its waste and recycling services and began implementing environmentally-friendly initiatives in an effort to make Covington a cleaner and greener place to live.

Since the implementation of these environmentally-friendly initiatives, the City has seen positive results.

Solid Waste Coordinator Sheila Fields stated, “We have seen an increase in recycling participation and tonnage since the commencement of the new waste and recycling contract. As of January 2017, the amount of waste tonnage that has been diverted away from the landfill for recycling is up 20% from this time last year. We will continue our efforts to improve and expand our services.

“The City is working hard to educate residents and businesses about its environmentally friendly initiatives and how to ‘Recycle Right’ by adhering to the waste and recycling guidelines. By working together, we can all do our part to make the City a greener and cleaner place to live, work and play.”

In addition to the restoration of weekly recycling, the City continues to look at other aspects of its waste management contract to further meet the needs of its residents and businesses.
