COVINGTON, Ky. — Over the next four to six weeks, crews from the Covington Fire Department will be out across the city conducting flow-tests on fire hydrants.
This important maintenance work helps ensure firefighters have accurate information about how much water each hydrant can provide when responding to fires. As part of this process, the Fire Department color-codes hydrants based on their water flow rates, measured in gallons per minute (GPM). These color-coded indicators allow firefighters to quickly identify a hydrant's capacity without having to tap the hydrant to determine its flow during an emergency.
Flow-testing may cause temporary water discoloration in homes near a hydrant being tested. While this can be inconvenient, it is a temporary side effect of the testing process.
The Covington Fire Department apologizes for any inconvenience and appreciates the public's patience and understanding as crews complete this important work to help keep our community safe.
