COVINGTON, Ky. — Following the overwhelming popularity of its Spring Native Plant Giveaway, Covington Parks & Recreation is bringing the program back for a second round this year with the Fall Native Plant Giveaway on Sept. 2. 

Presented by Covington Parks & Recreation, Keep Covington Beautiful, and Groundwork Ohio River Valley (ORV), the event will give Covington residents the opportunity to receive one free native plant specifically adapted to the region’s local climate and growing conditions. 

The Fall Native Plant Giveaway will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at Goebel Park. 

“After seeing how excited residents were to participate in our spring giveaway, we knew we had to bring it back,” Covington Parks & Recreation Manager Greg Stacy said. “Native plants are an easy way for residents to make a positive impact on our local environment while adding beauty and biodiversity to their own yards and outdoor spaces.” 

Native plants provide important benefits to Covington’s local ecosystem. They require less water, do not require pesticides, and provide vital food and shelter for Kentucky’s native birds, butterflies, and other pollinators. 

Residents who participate can select one free native plant species that is appropriate for their outdoor space. Groundwork ORV staff will also provide participants with a physical or digital planting guide to help them successfully establish and care for their new plant. 

Residents must have an outdoor area ready for planting. 

Registration is required to receive a plant. Residents can register online through the Fall Native Plant Giveaway registration form. 

Residents are encouraged to register early and take advantage of this opportunity to add a native plant to their yard while helping to strengthen Covington’s local ecosystem.
