COVINGTON, Ky. — The City of Covington is set to receive $4.5 million in federal funding for infrastructure improvements at the Covington Central Riverfront site following congressional approval of the federal appropriations bill, pending final approval by the President of the United States.
The funding request, sponsored by U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, will support the second phase of infrastructure related to the construction of a 600-plus car parking garage, a riverfront podium, and a land bridge, all key components of the Covington Central Riverfront redevelopment. The land bridge is designed to function as an elevated public park, creating a welcoming green space where families and residents from across the city can gather while enjoying views of the Cincinnati skyline and the Ohio River.
In 2025, Mayor Ron Washington traveled to Washington, D.C. to advocate directly for Covington’s priorities, meeting with members of Congress and federal partners to highlight the importance of continued investment in the city’s riverfront and broader infrastructure needs.
“This is the result of sustained advocacy and strong partnerships at every level of government,” Mayor Ron Washington said. “The support of Senator McConnell and our other congressional leaders for the Covington Central Riverfront development represents a major investment in public infrastructure for Covington and all of Northern Kentucky.”
Mayor Washington also highlighted the long-term economic and community benefits of the investment.
“By strengthening our riverfront’s infrastructure and laying the foundation for future development, this project will create jobs, attract private investment, and support long-term regional growth,” Washington said. “Beyond the economic impact, this investment improves quality of life by creating spaces and infrastructure designed for all Covington residents, families, and visitors alike.”
The Covington Central Riverfront project is a cornerstone of the City’s long-term redevelopment strategy. The initiative will transform 23 acres of former industrial land into a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood.
The development has already reconnected the street grid and created new public green spaces. A variety of developers are actively breaking ground and advancing construction across the site. The development will feature locally owned retailers and restaurants, along with office space supporting high-paying jobs, housing options, and enhanced public access to the riverfront. Together, these elements are creating a dynamic destination that will strengthen Covington’s economic future.
Final distribution of funds is contingent upon the President’s approval of the appropriations bill. Once enacted, the City will coordinate with federal partners to move forward with project implementation in accordance with all applicable requirements.
