COVINGTON, Ky. – Spice, sugar, sparkle, and nasty sweaters abound this weekend in The Cov. So, get out there and show your holiday spirit.
Move over “The Great British Baking Show” and make room for Braxton Brewing Co.’s Gingerbread House Competition tonight.
You don’t need a background in architecture to win what is sure to be a heated competition. All you have to do is keep your cool in the event that you need to piece together a crumbling roof (without licking your fingers) … a steady hand to pipe swirling sugary trimmings around pint-sized windows … and a keen eye for peppermint and jellybean placement.
An indisputable truth is that Covington’s Parks & Recreation Department knows how to throw a stellar event for Covington residents. One of its best happens on Friday.
Happy COV Holidays takes place in the Commission Chambers at Covington City Hall, and will be a festive evening of holiday fun for the whole family.
It’s a free event and is open to everyone (so bring your friends and family along to celebrate the season).
There will be photos with Santa, ornaments to decorate, delicious holiday treats, and lots of holiday-themed fun.
And, if you have kiddos in your life who have completed a letter to Santa, listing all that their heart desires this holiday, be sure to bring it with you on Friday and drop it into Parks & Rec’s North Pole mailbox in the City Hall lobby. They’ll be sure it gets straight to Santa.
While tin and aluminum are considered traditional gifts for a 10-year wedding anniversary (with diamonds being the more modern choice), the #spikow2.5 – 10 Year Wedding Event and Archive at Pique on Friday must surely raise the bar for anniversary celebrations.
#spikow2.5 is an exhibition that celebrates artists Clint Basinger and Lindsey Whittle’s 10-year wedding anniversary, showcasing the archive from their first two wedding events, aptly named #spikow and #spikow2.
There will be cake … and pie. Even better, there will be karaoke, ’90s school photos, a script reading of “#spikow3 The Opera,” and performances throughout the night. They’ll have current wedding attire on display as well as outfits from weddings past.
Santa and the missus must have a standing December brunch reservation at The Standard, because that dynamic, crimson-clad duo will be back in The Cov on Saturday taking gift requests and posing for pictures at Brunch with Santa and Mrs. Claus at The Standard.
Kiddos get a free hot chocolate with the purchase of a kid’s meal, and there will be a decorate-your-own hot chocolate mug station. Loads of cheer happening here, so be like the Clauses and make your reservation.
Milk, cookies set the mood
Holiday movies and milk and cookies will set the perfect cozy atmosphere at Chad’s Christmas Extravaganza on Saturday at Creative House of Art & Design.
You can either drop off the kiddos or stick around and craft with them, because this is going to be a fun-filled Christmas crafting event for all ages.
It’s OK to secretly think that the sweater you’ll wear to Saturday’s Ugly Sweater Party! at The Standard is cute.
After all, sweaters festooned with sequined Santas and elf appliques can be quite charming. Especially ones that have been well-maintained since the mid-’80s.
Classic!
Bring a regifted item, and you can participate in the White Elephant Gift Exchange.
And speaking of The Standard, it will be hosting its first Holiday Market on Sunday beneath a big old, heated tent on its patio. Among the vendors: Laughing Bees Honey, books from Roebling Point Books & Coffee, Sweet Pea Hattery, Hometown Vintage, Scarlet Begonia’s Flower Truck, S.E. the Surrealist, Magpie & Molly, Covington Artisan Collective, and Wendigo Tea.
You’ll also find drink specials featuring Angel’s Envy and Patron at the Not So Standard Holiday Market to sip on while you shop for cool gifts for the people lucky enough to be on your holiday shopping list.
