GAC, free trees & WOB Crawl

COVINGTON, Ky. – This is clearly the weekend for spring cleaning in The Cov. We can’t speak for your house itself, but when you target a neighborhood spot and join with others to make it sparkle, there will definitely be fun involved (also the satisfaction of seeing your city beam with beauty).

But, lest you think the weekend is only about tidying up, take a look at our list of cool things to do. You’ll want to add some art, shopping, music, dancing, running, craft-making, and more to your to-do list.

Garments as art

The garments in your closet and drawers might be tossed around like a hot mess, but at Pique Gallery’s All Sewn Up pop-up exhibition tonight, you’ll see that, in the right hands, garments have grand possibilities to become art.

This is a one-night-only event at the gallery, so don’t miss out. Stop in and be inspired.

Spring cleaning in The Cov

Hundreds of volunteers will be working at dozens of sites all over The Cov on Saturday for the Great American Cleanup 2024, and you can (and should) be among them.

This annual spring cleanup involves picking up trash, planting flowers, spreading mulch, cutting brush, pulling weeds, and other tasks that are necessary to keep The Cov pretty.

Trash bags, gloves, trash grabbers, tools, hand sanitizer, snacks, and trash bag removal will be available, thanks to the generous support of Rumpke. There’s also going to be a giveaway for every volunteer.

Pitch in to help pollinators

Turns out Saturday is a full day of beautification in The Cov.

Do you enjoy the fresh foliage and overall rebound of nature that comes with spring? Then lend a hand to help all pollinators flying about that make all that natural beauty possible. Saturday’s  Goebel Park Pollinator Garden event welcomes your help.

The event is made possible through a partnership with the Northern Kentucky Sierra Club, Covington Parks and Recreation, and Make Goebel Great. And it’s not just this Saturday. Mark your calendar: this event will happen the first and third Saturday of the month through October.

Free trees at Linden Day

The Linden Day Covington Arbor Day Celebration at Historic Linden Grove Cemetery & Arboretum on Saturday will have free tree seedlings (two per guest), a split-the-pot and other giveaways, live acoustic music, and more.

The giveaway tree species are the real stars of the day. The list of choices includes bald cypress … fruiting apple trees … Burr oaks … persimmons … wild plums … and buttonbush.

Each tree comes with complete planting instructions, as well as planting location recommendation guidelines, based on the species size. Plus, there will be a free promotional novelties giveaway while supplies last. Lots of fun happening here.

Join in the ‘Crawl’

If you haven’t participated in an Aviatra Accelerators’ WOB Crawl (WOB as in Woman-Owned Business), then you’re in for a treat on Saturday.

The WOB Crawl is a fantastic way to support great women-owned businesses in The Cov and have a fun time with all the friends you’ll want to invite to join you (plus you get to meet all the really cool women business owners).

Businesses along the Crawl range from fashion and home décor boutiques to bars to restaurants to physical and mental wellness businesses.

Your $20 ticket includes a wristband that entitles you to exclusive discounts and deals at the 30 participating woman-owned businesses … a map of the participating businesses and suggested routes … a raffle entry for items donated by the WOBs … and a WOB Crawl shopping bag for the first 100 attendees.

Know your Derby legends

Got plans for a Kentucky Derby party next weekend? Then why not be the most Derby-informed guest in the room?

The finest tutorial for fascinating morsels about Northern Kentuckians who contributed to the Kentucky Derby is at the Behringer-Crawford Museum’s Race to Fame: Hometown Kentucky Derby Legends Reception on Saturday.

The exhibit runs through Aug. 4, but why on earth would you wait, what with the Derby just a week away? Smart pupils will brush up on their Derby party cocktail conversation talking points right this minute.

A ‘fun run’ for a serious cause

The Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission (NKCAC) Community Collaboration for Children Program’s Family Fun Run on Sunday at Pioneer Park is rallying support for a worthy cause: child abuse prevention.

You can run or walk during the event, which will feature free Kona Ice and food, live music, giveaways, and plenty of vendors. No registration is necessary and the event is free to attend.
