Derby legends, pollinators & vintage

COVINGTON, Ky. – If you’re all about the fun, there’s no need to head out of town this weekend for a destination that’s more in alignment with the path of optimum totality for Monday’s total solar eclipse.

No 1, we’ve good stuff worth sticking around for in The Cov, including cool local Derby history to learn, pollinator habitat to tend to, art, vintage shopping, live music, and more.

And No. 2, Covington Parks and Recreation has a super cool Solar Eclipse Viewing event on Monday at Devou Park’s Volpenhein Shelter.

As always, we’ve got you covered …

(Local) Derby legends

You’ll be holding conversational court at next month’s Derby parties after you delve into the lives of Derby legends that hail from Northern Kentucky (right here in The Cov, even).

Saturday’s Opening of Race to Fame: Hometown Kentucky Derby Legends at Behringer-Crawford Museum will have silks, saddles, helmets, and other accoutrements from esteemed jockeys such as Kentucky Derby winners Eddie Arcaro and Mack Garner. Also on display: photographs and autographed items from legendary horseman and Triple Crown winner Steve Cauthen.

What’s really cool are the stories you’ll hear about the horse owners, breeders, and trainers from our area, highlighting the pivotal roles they played in shaping horseracing. For instance, did you know that Ron McAnally was from Covington and spent his childhood at The Children’s Home of Northern Kentucky in Devou Park after his mother died? McAnally went on to become a three-time Eclipse Award winner and is best known for using a gentle hand and training techniques to help the irascible John Henry become a two-time Horse of the Year and Hall of Famer.

Saddle up and get to learning about all this local horse business. Mere weeks until “they’re off!”

Calling all pollinators

Keep Covington Beautiful wants you to join them in beautifying Goebel Park and helping local pollinators on Saturday at its Goebel Park Pollinator Garden maintenance event.

Saturday’s event kicks off events that will happen the first and third Saturday from April through October. Partners include the Sierra Club, Covington Parks & Rec, and Make Goebel Great.

Get a little dirty, get a little sore, all in the interests of helping vulnerable butterflies and bees.

Watch Bob paint

Local artist Bob Bartolt paints on canvas in what has been described as “a very unusual fashion,” applying spray paint to water, then dipping the canvas. It’s a process that takes several applications and a bit of manipulation to create his final product. You have to see it to appreciate.

On Saturday, at Meet the Artist: Bob Bartolt at Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop, you can meet Bob and chat with him about his art-making process, take a look at some of the work he’ll have on hand, and enter a drawing to win his work titled, “Dots.”

Vintage treasures

Sunday is the day for treasure hunters. For those who seek out the unique … the timeless … the quirky wardrobe staples from the era of long ago that you know you were meant to be born in but weren’t.

The Annual Spring and Summer Vintage Trunk Show at Julie’s Inspiration Consignment Shoppe will be a veritable portal to the past as you make your way through all genres of fashion staples. You belong here.

‘Tramps like us …’

Look, anybody can plunk down a marker (or apply a fancy marker dauber) when “B-11” or “N-37” is called.

But it takes a keener ear – and a bit more appreciation of the vast array of musical tunes in the world -- to fill out a bingo card while following the rules at Frosthaus’ Music Bingo on Sunday.

Come see what it’s all about at “the most fun brunch in town.” Oh, there might be surprise dance challenges too.
