Chai, smart women & Mario

COVINGTON, Ky. – It’s kind of a chill weekend coming up, don’t you think? Maybe that’s because next week The Cov will be pulsing with a big green energy and likely flowing with green beer.

Meanwhile, this is the weekend to learn to make and sip good tea, watch cool flicks, get a little crafty, and maybe step into a real-life board game (stroll down, you’ll see).

Chill with chai

Did you know that it’s redundant to say, “chai tea?” That’s because in Hindi “chai” means “tea.”

You’ll be steeped in chai knowledge after tonight’s Let’s Make Chai Night at The Roost Latonia. Expect a unique experience in the art of chai preparation and its history. Plan to learn, sip, and savor, plus take home your very own container of chai goodness.

Double feature

Grab a bag of popcorn and settle into back-to-back flicks on Friday when the Kenton County Public Library celebrates International Women’s Day.

That’s right, March 8 is a global day of celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action to accelerate gender parity, and that explains the library’s selections for International Women’s Day: Movie Double Feature. The two movies are On the Basis of Sex, about a young Ruth Bader Ginsberg arguing the first gender-discrimination suit in court, and Hidden Figures, where the brilliance of unsung heroes Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Dorothy Vaughan propelled the first American into orbit in 1962.

Chains and charms

On Saturday, you can design your own charm bracelet at Purple Paisely, Local Artisan Shop’s Charm Bracelet Design Class.

You’ll get to select the chain you want and charms that are meaningful to you. Be sure to add a bunch of crystals because shine and sparkle make everything better. Chain, charm, and crystals provided for small fee (with a discount if you pay in cash).

A day for a mustachio’d plumber

The heroic little plumber with the massive mustache first showed up in 1981 in the platform game called Donkey Kong. Word is designers wanted the spinach-gobbling Popeye as the game’s protagonist but couldn’t get the licensing rights, so they created a little carpenter with an oversized mustache and called him “Jumpman.”

Of course you know where this story is headed: It wasn’t long before Jumpman got a new name (“Mario”), a new gig (plumber), a brother (“Luigi”), and a new game (“Mario Bros.”).

For a while, the brothers fought monsters inside the New York sewer system, then later moved their adventures to the Mushroom Kingdom, where they took up rescuing that land’s princess and sovereign ruler.

We know there’s all range of details, battles, histories, and more not mentioned here, and those omissions may well send Mario acolytes reeling, so please forgive us for what we’ve left out about this little fella’s vast history.

Fast forward to 2024, and Mario has his own day. That’s right, Sunday is Mario Day. A full day to celebrate that heroic little plumber.

And why not celebrate by becoming Mario yourself at the Life-Size Mario Party at Kenton County Public Library on Sunday. You’ll play Mario in a life-size version of the game, “Mario Party,” advancing through the board, playing mini games, and earning coins to trade in for prizes.

Fiction and felines

We’ll say it right up front: Silent Reading Time with Rescue Kitties at Purrfect Day Cat CafĂ© on Sunday could go a lot of ways.

After all, think of your leisurely read of the Sunday newspaper, a well-written out-of-town publication that actually has an Arts & Theater section. Settled in with a hot beverage, you quietly finger through the pages when, what the … a paw slices through the fold. What were you thinking? A cat will not be ignored.

Don’t you remember how it was during COVID when you worked from home? Every workday you were at your home computer for hours while Whiskers anchored your keyboard, staring in judgment, as if he could do your job better than you, and deep down you knew it was true. Your colleagues would probably like him better too. Imposter. Admit it. There was tension.

Silent reading with kittens. On its face it sounds inviting. Sweet. Serene. It may well be that and more. Just be careful when you turn those pages and do employ some discernment in the book you choose to bring. Consider a title, an author, a genre that a cat would deem worthy of their time. Perhaps an academic tome or historical memoir. Don’t embarrass the cat.
