Bike plan effort update on Monday

Virtual public meeting will present draft recommendations, routes in Covington, Newport

COVINGTON, Ky. – The public will have another opportunity to weigh in on an ongoing effort to make it safer and easier for individuals to travel by bicycle around Northern Kentucky’s urban core, whether for fun or commute.

Bike advocacy organization Tri-State Trails (in partnership with the cities of Covington and Newport) will hold a virtual public meeting from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

“Feedback from the public has been instrumental in shaping the Covington + Newport Bicycle Transportation Plan,” Tri-State Trails Executive Director Wade Johnston said. “At the virtual public meeting, we'll recap what we've heard from residents and stakeholders so far, share our updated proposed routes, and discuss other non-infrastructure recommendations being considered for the plan."

To join the meeting, participants need to register at Bike Plan Virtual Public Meeting. After doing so, they will be sent an online link.

Tri-State Trails will record the meeting and post that recording online – along with maps, other materials, and a survey – at Covington-Newport Bike Plan. The public comment period will remain open through Nov. 13.

“Trying to create any layer of bike infrastructure in an older city with narrow streets and a high demand for parking is a tough task, but we think we’ve made progress, and we look forward to hearing what the public thinks about it,” Covington City Manager Ken Smith said. “We appreciate Tri-State Trails’ passion and commitment and hope to continue our collaborative relationship.”

Long-term goal

City officials and Tri-State Trails signed an agreement earlier this year to work toward coming up with a formal yet feasible long-range bike infrastructure plan that would make Northern Kentucky’s largest river cities more bike friendly. (See “Bicycle infrastructure plan on consent agenda.”)
