Jack-O-Lanterns, block party & collage

COVINGTON, Ky. – By now it’s readily apparent that Halloween is a LOT more than a single night of putting on a costume and going door-to-door for candy. For many people – and we will neither confirm nor deny that we’re among them – it’s a month-long state-of-mind that demands intense preparation for that one night.

Seeing as how we’re coming down the final stretch toward that Hallowed Eve, there remains serious pumpkin carving to be done. In The Cov this weekend, there are opportunities to do exactly that. …

Having said that, however, if you’re NOT one of those Halloween-infatuated people and are completely over and done with anything that has to do with a pumpkin or even the color orange, The Cov is here for you too, with plenty of non-Halloween-themed options this weekend.

Grin or grimace?

You bring the creativity and Covington Parks & Recreation will bring the pumpkins and carving tools.

Give thought as to whether you want to slice a grin or grimace into this year’s Jack-O-Lantern because Parks & Rec’s Pumpkin Carving event at David Housley Pavilion tonight is your chance to create the scariest, funniest, angriest, happiest, or most mellow pumpkin of your dreams.

The best part – other than a whole lot of fun – is that Parks & Rec will display these pumpkins at its 2nd Annual Jack-O-Lantern Festival. More about that later.

Tree tending

Everything grows better with a little care and nurturing. Trees are no exception.

On Saturday, Reforest Northern Kentucky 2023 partners with the City for its annual volunteer event focused on the many trees they’ve planted over the years in an effort to restore Kentucky’s native woodlands. The group is looking for help removing old tree tubes and installing new ones, pruning vines, and eradicating invasives.

The event starts early at Devou Park near the Rotary Grove Memorial and it’s a pretty big deal. Over the last 15 years, Reforest NKY has planted more than 42 acres (that’s 32 football fields for those needing a visual sports equivalent) with native woodland trees. During that time, more than 2,700 volunteers have helped make it happen. This weekend, be another one of them.

Party in Latonia

Latonia Halloween Block Party returns on Saturday for family-friendly Halloween fun.

Not only will there be carriage rides, games, trick-or-treat, and live music, this year there’s the addition of a group costume contest. Think of the possibilities that you and your friends and family can cook up, whether you aim for a theme of irreverence or innocence.

Head to Ritte’s Corner and/or Latonia Baptist Church, and you’ll see the crowd. It’s always big.

An entire day for reading

Doesn’t that sound divine? An entire day devoted to books and stories.

The African American Read-in at Kenton County Public Library on Saturday is a day-long celebration of African American literature, and there are many fine authors to celebrate.

The day includes a special-themed Saturday Storytime and live music from the Cincy Blues Society. All ages welcome.

Family festival fun

Covington Parks & Recreation’s 2nd Annual Jack-O-Lantern Festival at David Housley Pavilion returns Saturday as Covington’s most exciting Halloween event for the entire family.

Kiddos can look forward to face painting, “bounce” houses, free food and drinks, a petting zoo, themed games, trunk-or-treating, a costume contest, and more. Oh, and you know those cool pumpkins that everybody carved on Wednesday and Thursday evening at David Housley Pavilion? They’re going to be on big display at the festival.

Come in your favorite costume and have a howling good time.

An ‘utterly incomplete’ art exhibit

Odds are that your earliest memory of a collage dates back to 1st grade, when you glued those torn pieces of construction paper into something your mother framed and (claims she) still treasures. Starting Sunday, you’ll have the opportunity to see much more sophisticated and seriously cool collage art – AND talk to the artists who created the work.

Exhibition X: An Utterly Incomplete Examination of Collage in Contemporary Art is described as a loose examination of collage strategies and techniques across a whole range of media. It opens Sunday at The Carnegie with an event, Exhibition X: Beers and Bloodies with the Curators and Artists.

Instead of organizing the exhibit around a particular theme, the curators opted for a messier approach that brings all the work together in one building -- a collage strategy for the collage art. If you’re curious why, you’ll get to chat with the curators too at this event and find out.
