Paradise & pipe cleaners

COVINGTON, Ky. – Maybe “weather permitting” should be standard language when we’re telling you about outdoor events in The Cov. Last week saw cancellations/rescheduling, so our wise counsel is to always check these links before you scoot out the door, because sudden summer downpours can halt or delay an activity or event.

That said, let’s move forward anticipating a stunningly gorgeous weekend in The Cov, where music, libations, and fine entertainment will fill the streets.

Expect to hear lots of good tunes because there’s a big ol’ music festival happening, and that’s in addition to the usual weekend score of fine crooners.

Outdoor tunes & brews

Just when you think there’s nothing better than a weekend outdoor music and beer festival, along comes a pre-party for the big party.

The Paradise Music Festival Official Pre-Party happens tonight in the Braxton Brewing Taproom as the precursor to the big soiree, the Paradise Music and Beer Festival, which returns to Covington on Friday on 7th Street, right outside of Braxton (and inside too). The festival runs through Saturday and is all about good music and good beer.

Plus, you’ll find after-parties for this two-day event over at Madison Theater.

Admission to paradise is FREE, which is likely contrary to what your religious upbringing led you to believe.

Another try for Lyle

Rain might have thwarted last week’s showing of “Lyle, Lyle Crocodile,” but the City’s intrepid Parks & Rec team isn’t giving up.

With an unrivaled determination to bring family fun to The Cov, on Friday they’ll go for a redo over at Hands Pike Park of Movie Night: “Lyle, Lyle Crocodile.”

There won’t be a telescope for stargazing or the grill for barbecuing, but there will be plenty of popcorn and a talented crocodile who will not disappoint.

A pretty funny ‘dummy’

As a kid, Mike Hemmelgarn sold door-to-door newspaper subscriptions so he could buy his first “dummy,” a hardwood puppet named “Marvin.” Then he learned ventriloquism from a “Jimmy Nelson Instant Ventriloquism” record album.

Ol’ wooden Marvin has long since retired, while Hemmelgarn moved on with younger ‘dummy’ models sculpted from foam and latex. (Marvin, in a nod to that creepy movie “Magic” with Anthony Hopkins, likely murmurs from storage, “Have fun, Mikey. We’ll soon see how easily those new jamokes shatter. Meanwhile, I’m still here. See you soon.”)

On Saturday you can watch this Ventriloquist at Kenton County Public Library, where he’ll wow young and old alike with a range of comedy-infused ventriloquism, juggling, magic, balloon sculpting. (Let’s hope Marvin doesn’t show up.)

Twisted bouquets

Ever notice the extraordinary things you can create with pipe cleaners? You can twist those wiry chenille stems into everything from a caterpillar to a tiara.

On Sunday, learn to twist them into beautiful flower bouquets under the creative tutelage of Parks & Recreation staff at their Adult Craft workshop at Sen. Gus Sheehan Park on Parkway Avenue.

Battle of the exes (Harry’s version)

After last weekend’s Taylor Swift Battle of the Exes at Creative House of Art & Design, Harry Styles gets his turn (or due) with a Harry Styles Inspired Paint Night Battle of The Exes on Sunday at CHAD.

Harry, who likely came up during last week’s Swift “battle,” has had his share of notable paramours. Remember the rumors that flew about actor and filmmaker Olivia Wilde leaving “Ted Lasso” (Jason Sudeikis) for Harry? (Oh, Harry, no one likes a homewrecker.)

In addition to a guided Harry-themed craft led by Mr. Chad, you can look forward to Harry-themed cocktails and mocktails, plus delicious charcuterie boards, trivia, a dance party, and prizes.

The butterflies will thank you

On the northern edge of Goebel Park is a patch of land filled with beautiful flowers that attract butterflies.

The Goebel Butterfly Garden is a piece of Covington’s participation in the national Mayors' Monarch Pledge, but hey – that garden doesn’t maintain itself. It takes muscle, sweat, and volunteer commitment.

You can help out during the course of two hours on Saturday during the Goebel Park Pollinator Garden Cleanup. It’s a Keep Covington Beautiful event.

Come help out.
