COVINGTON, Ky. – How do you top a weekend that featured professional soccer and baseball, two nights of Taylor Swift, and fireworks?
By doing a whole lot of nothing, not even leaving your couch. Stay put and … binge Yellowjackets … read a book … take long naps … do crossword puzzles … order carry-out … and maybe lift yourself off the couch long enough to get some gelato.
Just kidding. Get back out there and get ready for another great weekend. We all know it doesn’t take packed sport stadiums or a mega popstar performance for us to have a good time in The Cov.
This weekend you’ll find live music in dang near every part of town, events where you’ll learn a thing or two, an outdoor movie, exhibits, a musical, and a whole lot more.
You’ve got a problem in your backyard: let’s say a rotting tree stump, stack of fallen branches, or brush pile. You’ve been staring it down, hoping you’ll come out one day to find that it has reduced itself to sawdust. But it hasn’t.
Here’s another option: Hügelkultur.
Don’t know what that is? Then attend the HUB Garden Class: Hügelkultur that happens tonight at the Riddle Yates Community Garden on Lee Street in Westside.
Hügelkultur is a centuries-old practice of building a garden bed from rotten logs and plant debris, since that stuff decays and releases nutrients and increases the fungal population of the soil.
You make the beds by clearing an area, then heaping on layers of stuff you already have in your yard (especially old rotting wood and leaves), and stacking it up to as high as 5 or 6 feet. A little dirt, and grow grow grow.
The class is free, but you should register.
Give your long locks a middle part, don the biggest, roundest sunglasses that will stay on your face, pull on some bellbottoms, wear anything paisley, and slide your feet into a pair of chunky-heeled shoes because you’re going to boogie back to the 1970s on Saturday at the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra’s Boogie Nights concert at the Devou Park Bandshell.
Time travel with the KSO’s Boogie Band and vocalists and the music of Donna Summer, KC & the Sunshine Band, ABBA, The Village People, The Bee Gees, and more.
Or … looking for a vibe with less of a crowd (because the KSO’s concerts certainly draw some big ones)? No sweat. You can attend the symphony’s Saturday 10 a.m. dress rehearsal instead. Pretty cool, right?

Covington Parks & Rec presents Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile Movie Night at Hands Pike Park on Saturday – an event for the whole family (or simply anyone who enjoys anthropomorphic entertainment).
Plus, there will be a barbecue with hotdogs and hamburgers (popcorn too, of course). But the best part is that Parks & Rec will bring its big telescope for some stargazing.

They’ve performed in 48 states and have toured internationally in places like Korea, Italy, Germany, Bulgaria, France, the United Kingdom, Norway, The Netherlands, and Belgium.
This weekend they’re performing here in The Cov.
The Bi-Okoto Drum & Dance Theatre Presents: Rhythms of Our Land performance at the Kenton County Public Library happens Saturday, and if you want to experience a broad range of dance dialects and styles from various tribes in Nigeria, Ghana, Guinea, and Senegal using authentic costumes, props, and instruments, they’re the real deal.
