If weather sirens sound, take shelter in county garage

Emergency plan created as threat of storms

come during huge Taylor Swift concerts

COVINGTON, Ky. – If severe weather hits Covington in the next couple of days, concert-goers and others along downtown streets or the riverfront can seek shelter in the Kenton County Parking Garage at 230 Madison Ave.

That’s according to the “Taylor Swift Special Weather Plan” put together by Kenton County Homeland Security Emergency Management and being distributed this afternoon in advance of concerts by the pop singer in downtown Cincinnati.

“The National Weather Service has identified the potential risk of severe weather developing this weekend, particularly Friday (today) and Saturday evenings when large crowds are expected along the riverfront areas of Cincinnati, Covington and Newport,” the release says.

If a severe thunderstorm warning is issued, people outside will hear sirens that are located on Johnson Street in Covington and in Devou Park, among other places on the riverfront.

If the sirens were to sound, the release advises anyone outdoors and along the riverfront to seek shelter inside immediately. But it also says people can seek shelter in the garage from wind and rain even if the sirens don’t sound.

The new warning plan is in place only for the two days and only for the riverfront area, officials said. Typically they only activate sirens countywide for tornado warnings, and that policy will be back in place come Sunday.
