City fixing road sections in advance of larger state project to come

COVINGTON, Ky. – Madison Pike through part of Latonia will be reduced to one lane for about two weeks starting today as Public Works crews from the City of Covington work to temporarily fix a badly corroded driving surface.

The road, which is a state route, is on the radar of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for a major resurfacing project, but with the date of that project not yet set, Covington wanted to give drivers some relief, Public Works Director Keith Bales said.

Rather than just filling potholes, crews from the Department’s Right of Way Division are milling entire sections of the road surface and then laying a new surface using a cold planer acquired by Public Works a year ago for just such repairs.

Bales said the patch-paving repairs are more substantial than just filling holes but they aren’t the permanent solution to the persistent potholes – that will come with the state project later.

City crews will spend about a week on the northbound side, from about Birch Avenue to Madison Court just north of the 90-degree bend. Then they’ll move to the southbound side.
