Duveneck, mom & BBQ

COVINGTON, Ky. – First, let’s talk about Sunday.

Sunday is Mother’s Day, and if you want to get it right for the mothers in your life, know this: Mothers do not want to make reservations for their own brunch (and we’re talking not only to children but to spouses -- make reservations for that mother’s brunch). In fact, a pretty ideal day would be if the mothers in your life don’t have to plan a single thing for anyone.

With that in mind, there’s a big ol’ BBQ bash on the river this weekend, a really cool annual local art show, and a bunch of other good stuff, some of which might involve brunch. You know what to do (or not to do).

A whiff of brisket from the river

The 2023 Smoke on the River BBQ Fest starts Friday and runs through Sunday at the Covington Plaza, featuring an array of top pitmasters.

Expect to find some mouthwatering barbeque, frosty beverages, and a string of live entertainment.

Local favorites you can count on are Sweets & Meats, Glier’s Goetta, and House of Brisket, and they will be joined by food trucks and festival vendors serving up treats like a Grippo’s BBQ Sundae, Cherrywood Smoked Sandwiches, a BBQ Pineapple Boat, and, as you might expect, pig roastings and on-site meat-smoking all weekend long.

Artisan market returns

Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop’s Local Artisan Market returns on Saturday for the first of its summer showcases.

Here’s a good time to check out the vast range of art created by local artists in venues both inside and outside of the shop. (You’ll find the outdoor market at the corner of Scott and 8th St., just half a block from the shop).

These markets will happen on the 2nd Saturday of the month between May and September, so mark your calendar accordingly.

Art for mom (and you)

The 52nd Annual Duveneck Art Show at George Rogers Clark Park on Saturday would be a great way to spend the day with your mom on Mother’s Day, or just enjoy a solo stroll while you peruse good art.

Plus, there’ll be music, food trucks, and a spectacular view of the river.

Helping the hungry, easily

Oh, and here’s a way to help those in need that involves almost no effort: Leave some canned goods or other non-perishable food in a bag by your mailbox on Saturday.

That’s all you have to do.

Your postal carrier will pick it up and take it back to headquarters, where folks from three agencies who feed people in Covington will pick it up.

Yes, you’ll feel good for a long time, especially if you go overboard and leave a whole plastic grocery bag full of cans and such.
