Baseball, Pride & proms

COVINGTON, Ky. – If you looked around the office today and asked, “Where the heck is everyone?” then you must be either new to town or not a fan of Major League Baseball.

Reds Opening Day events started early here in The Cov today and will continue well on through the evening whether the hometown team wins or not. (Yeah, technically Great American Ball Park is north of the river, but physically it’s actually closer to Covington than it is to a good part of Cincinnati, and besides, how many players live here in Northern Kentucky?)

So we understand if you’re not at work today (legally or not), and if this whole annual Opening Day consumes you.

But be sure to save energy for all the other good stuff that the weekend holds. Those kids of yours are going to want to go to the best Easter egg hunt ever, and you might like to take in a whiskey tutorial, see a new play, or get all gussied up and take the one you’re sweet on to a “prom.”

Commence to scrollin’ …

Opening Day brews

Here are some of the Opening Day events in The Cov that we’re aware of:

Smoke Justis Presents: Opening Day in The Cov Street Party features live music, ice-cold brews, good eats, and plenty of Reds-themed “shenanigans.” … Reds Opening Day at Braxton Brewing Company has Cracker Jacks, a Hop Fly West Coast IPA, and a Cracker Jack Smash Cocktail on hand as well as all your favorite Braxton beers on tap and hot slices of Dewey’s Pizza too. … Reds Opening Day at The Well has live music from David Campbell along with the game. … Opening Day at Keystone Bar & Grill. … Jesse & Anna LIVE from Covington Yard.

An Irish tutorial

Sure, St. Patrick’s Day has come and gone, but whatever day today is is always a good day to learn more about Irish whiskey.

The Wiseguy Lounge Educational Series – Luck of the Irish! tonight at Goodfellas Pizzeria presents an in-depth look at what makes these spirits unique and delves not only into their storied history but also, most importantly, their varied flavors.

Sophia Abolafia from Pernod Ricard, a global convivial wine and spirits group (think Jameson, The Glenlivet, and Monkey 47), will share insight and understanding of Irish whiskeys, while the wisest guys behind the bar serve up a flight and cocktails with names like Irish Maid, Dubliner, and Craythur, and just overall celebrating all thing Irish.

Pirates, puppets & tomfoolery

All’s Faire opens at The Carnegie on Friday and tells the story of Johnson, a tightly wound private eye who’s been asked to solve a crime at a local Renaissance Festival.

But will this be an open and shut case? Or will Johnson and trusty sidekick Josh be distracted by all the fair maidens, griffins, massive turkey legs, puppets, and tomfoolery?

Apparently anything goes at Ye Olde Ren Faire and this just might be a tough case to crack.

Show your support

Friday is International Transgender Day of Visibility and the NKY Pride Center invites you to join them to create messages of support for the Northern Kentucky trans-youth community and their families.

Transgender Day of Visibility – Show Your Support for NKY Trans Kids will provide supplies to create messages of love and support that the center will feature for its community and online.

Civil War headstone dedication

Saturday would be a good day to pay a visit to Linden Grove Cemetery and Arboretum, especially if you’re a Civil War history buff or simply want to be part of a ceremony that honors veterans.

The Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, Nelson-Garfield Memorial Camp #3’s Headstone Dedication for Andrew J. Roby and Clarkson Keller at Linden Grove Cemetery will honor these two local veterans of the American Civil War.

The dedication is free to the public.

Best egg hunt ever

It’s BYOB on Saturday, as in Bring Your Own Basket, for Covington Parks & Recreation’s Easter Egg Hunt at the Devou Park Bandshell.

This year, the City’s annual Easter Egg Hunt includes a petting zoo, pictures with the Easter Bunny, food and drinks, and plenty of games, like a Bunny Sack Hop Race and an Egg Toss. Don’t let the kiddos miss out on this one because it’s going to be BIG fun.

Prom season

Order the boutonnieres and bouquets because it’s prom time in The Cov.

On Saturday, the fabulous bubs of the Covington Street Hockey League will no doubt be donning ruffled shirts and wide lapels in celebration of Prom, A Rad Ride Five Year Anniversary at Braxton Brewing Co.

It’s a free formal, but you need to RSVP -- and you need to dress to impress. The event features (as listed by the bubs): Bubs, Dates, Free Food, Braxton, Raffles and Merch, DJ Jay Kay, Photo booth, Awards, Honoring the City, and the first Hall of Fame Inductions. We’re talking about an awesome celebration here.
