Buff Orpingtons, fish fries & quilling

COVINGTON, Ky. – What are Buff Orpingtons, you ask? You can find out on Saturday.

In fact, there’s all kinds of stuff you can learn this weekend in The Cov, if you’re of the mind to expand your knowledge and skills.

There are fun things to do too – the reliably good live music that each weekend brings, and events involving donuts, beer, exercise, and soccer. And fish. Plenty of fish. So much fish.

Fry ’em up

The first scent of spring is in the air, so lift your head and take in a big ol whiff of fried fish.

Does anything signal that we’re in the final weeks of winter like a fish fry?

Starting Friday (and every Friday through April 7) the Covington Firefighters Fish Fry is back at the IAFF Local 38 Union Hall, and it’s a good one, with fresh takes on old favorites and more. (For more fish fries, see “Miscellaneous” below.)

Dine in or carry out. There’s a $1 discount for anyone in uniform, and that includes police officers, nurses, military, and firefighters. Tasty desserts are provided by the Peaselburg Neighborhood Association. Eat up.

Magical swirls and curls

If you find yourself in the mood for something frilly, here’s just the thing: Paper quilling, sometimes called paper rolling or paper filigree, is a technique that can be traced all the way back to the 15th century, although some folks believe it started in ancient Egypt.

During the Renaissance, nuns and monks took up the craft as a way to imitate ironwork. Today, quilling is used to make wall art, greeting cards, jewelry, and keepsakes. Now, you, like the nuns and monks of yore, can learn how to make those magical swirls and curls.

Ready for Spring Quilling Class at Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop on Saturday is an introductory class to this centuries-old paper craft technique, and you’ll get to try your hand at twirling paper into “Welcome to Spring” cards using a variety of paper rolls and scrolls, pinching them into shapes, creating flowers, leaves, hearts, butterflies, and more. (This stuff looks so fancy you’ll stare in disbelief at your own talent.)

Show your pride

That magnificent NKY Pride Parade & Festival that takes place in June in Covington doesn’t just happen at the 11th hour. It takes planning. Months of planning.

You can join in (and contribute some great ideas for making 2023 the best Pride ever) by volunteering for the 2023 NKY Pride Committee and attending the first NKY Pride 2023 Meeting on Saturday at the NKY Pride Center.

All ages welcome, light refreshments provided.

Home to roost

On Saturday, the dynamic father/daughter team of Rob and Lydia Farrell will impart wise counsel about how to raise backyard chickens in urban areas, specifically Covington.

If you attend Raising Backyard Chickens at The Roost, Latonia (an appropriately named venue, don’t you think?), you will be well-informed about all things related to raising chickens in the city … things like statutes to abide by, types of coops and runs (go to Pinterest right now and witness how hen houses have been elevated to state-of-the-art architecture), food types, water, supplements, and the predators known to lurk in cities and how to scare them off or get rid of them.

Lydia, who happens to be 11, has put together a small list of recommended hen breeds that will work well in the city, which she’ll be sharing, and, as an added treat, she’ll bring her favorite hen, Vanilla, from home. (You’re going to want one for yourself.)

Vanilla, BTW, is a Buff Orpington, a British breed of chicken that was bred in the late 19th Century in southeast England. (So, maybe instead of ordering coffee at The Roost, a cup of English tea might be in order as a nod to Vanilla’s country of origin).

High tea and hearts

Speaking of tea … raise your teacup, tip your tea hat or fascinator, and celebrate the creative spirit of The Cov with a giving heart.

Sunday’s Heartfelt Tea Party and Auction at The Hellmann Creative Center is a heart-themed auction highlighting locally created heart art, with all proceeds supporting the work of Art Equals, a nonprofit that empowers everyone to be an artist, providing community-driven accessible opportunities for creative growth and healing.
