Mardi Gras, ‘Maiden Mother Crone’ & murder

COVINGTON, Ky. – Krewes have been rolling through the French Quarter since January, but we’ve got a parade worth waiting for right here in The Cov on Saturday when the 2023 MainStrasse Mardi Gras Parade rolls down Main Street.

Plus, there’s some tree tappin’, an author reading, a murder to solve, and more to do this weekend.

So, scroll down for lagniappe, bon ami, and enjoy.

Open mic night

Stop doubting your work. No one else can speak your truth, write your story, or give word to how you see the world.

And one thing you can be sure of is that there will be someone in the room who needs to hear your words tonight at the Open Mic Poetry with Special Guests Pauletta Hansel and Sherry Cook Stanforth at Roebling Point Books & Coffee. That’s just how it works.

As you listen to Hansel and Stanforth share their exquisite poetry, something will surely stir within and you’ll want to step up to the podium too. So put pages in your backpack and be prepared to speak up.

Sappin’ season

Contrary to what many might think, New Englanders do not have a monopoly on maple syrup.

In fact, there’s plenty of tree-tappin’ for the sweet sap to be done right here in Kentucky, and you can find out all about it at the Syrup Season Open House: Tapping Trees for Family Fun event.

It will be held Saturday at the Marshall Road location of the Kenton County Extension Office. It’s free.

Peaceful prose

Just as Stevie Nick’s posed the question, “Can I handle the seasons of my life?” in that veritable anthem, “Landslide,” local author Amba Elieff seems to respond through the peaceful words of her book of poetry, “Maiden Mother Crone.”

On Saturday, Elieff will present a glimpse into the mind of a woman as she navigates 3 stages of womanhood at Maiden Mother Crone Poetry Reading and Book Signing at Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop.

Elieff writes about life experiences and the range of emotions that accompany them in a way that resonates. Her take?: “I am a plain poet. My prose is written to tell stories. To share my life with you.”

Allons!

Laissez les bons temps roulez because there’s a parade on Saturday and it’s a humdinger … it’s the bombdiggity .. it’s the parade of all parades … it’s the 2023 Mainstrasse Mardi Gras Parade.

Kicking off at Larry’s Dive Bar on 9th and Philadelphia streets, the parade will wind its way over to Main Street, where you would be wise to secure a good location for viewing and catching all range of cool stuff that will surely be tossed your way.

This year there will be 20 to 30 floats, roughly 30 big-ol’ fat heads, dance teams, skaters, cars, trucks, the beloved Covington Street Hockey League, and more.

The big head theme this year is 1980s cartoon characters. (Shucks, no Stewie or Hank Hill papier-mache heads, but we’re hopeful for Hello Kitty, Snake Eyes, Jem, Inspector Gadget, one or two “heroes on a half shell,” and maybe Optimus Prime.) BTW, the parade is family-friendly.

Afterward, get yourself a King Cake Cannoli from Del Gardo’s and wash it down with a Hurricane during the Mardi Gras Pub Crawl, which has 16 Covington bars and restaurants participating.

Too much love

One might ask, “Is there such a thing as too much love?”

When the word “love” is mistakenly (nay, deliberately?) substituted for more applicable words like “obsess,” “manipulate,” “need,” “suffocate,” “control,” all of which can stem from a debilitating fear of being alone, then yes, friend, there is such a thing as too much “love.”

And that brings us to Sunday’s event, Love You To Death at Dee Felice Café. It’s an interactive murder-mystery game with a prix fixe menu.

Because that’s what can happen when one “loves” or is “loved” too much. Someone snaps then tries to cleverly conceal the crime, and the next thing you know, a group of strangers have gathered around over a Caesar salad trying to figure out who did it and why before dessert arrives.
