Terrariums & Tinseltown titillation

COVINGTON, Ky. – Sunday’s the Super Bowl and Tuesday is Valentine’s Day, but you already knew that. You also already knew that there are plenty of places to celebrate both in The Cov.

You’re on your own for the game (but really, is it worth watching now that the local team ain’t in it?).

But we do have ideas to wow your partner. The Cov boasts all sorts of fancy places to sip a glass or three of wine, to buy flowers and jewelry, and find cannoli and frozen concoctions. And this weekend, you can give the gift of your company with a germination tutorial, earring-making, a musical, a drag show, live music, and more:

The Seed Whisperer

The ground won’t warm up for months, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get things started in your basement.

Don’t know how?

Come to The Roost in Latonia on Saturday for a Beginner Seed Course hosted by Latonia Uptown and taught by Jeff the Seed Whisperer. (OK, we made that nickname up, but he HAS been called that). Learn how to germinate by picking the best soil, container size, time of year, and lighting.

And while we’re on the topic of seeds and such, come to The Roost on Friday for the

Coffee Pot Terrarium Workshop. For the price of admission, you get a vintage coffee container or planter, two plants, soil, light bites, and a craft drink.

Makin’ hearts

Pink drinks and heart-making fun (the craft kind, not the four-valve muscle, silly) are on the menu Friday at Hearts at the Hellman at The Center for Great Neighborhoods of Covington.

Artist Jennifer Baldwin will show you how to make a monoprint envelope that unfolds into a heart, then you can use the supplies to create your own heart for the Art Equals’ Heartfelt Tea and Auction later this month.

Make sure you register.

Valentine’s drawing

Want a beautiful creation from a local artist? Come to Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop on Saturday for a free Valentine’s Gift Drawing.

Actually, there will be three drawings (11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 5 p.m.) for the likes of a rose card, heart earrings, a zipper charm, or face cream (and more). No purchase is required, but you do have to drop off an entry.

Also Saturday, you can design and create your own Valentine-themed earrings.

Hoops? Studs? Dangly creations bedazzled with all matter of crystals, baubles, and bric-a-brac. You decide. Tools and supplies provided.

Shop & share

The Ion Center for Violence Prevention in Covington is a godsend for victims of domestic violence. While you’re at Kroger on Saturday purchasing snacks and drinks for Sunday’s football game, here’s an easy way to help them stock pantry shelves at their emergency shelters.

The 14th annual Shop & Share event is sponsored by the Kentucky Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Kentucky First Lady Britainy Beshear, and Kroger.

It’s easy to donate. Just go to Kroger from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., grab a shopping list from volunteers at the entrance, and then buy some non-perishable items. On your way out the door, drop off the items.

Onstage rainstorm

Singin’ in the Rain “has all the makings of a Tinseltown tabloid headline – the starlet, the leading man, and a love affair that could change lives and make or break careers.”

That’s not our description. Those are the words of the people who should know – the cultured folks over at The Carnegie, Covington’s renowned theater.

It’s the last weekend, so see the above link for tickets to Friday and Saturday evening and Saturday and Sunday matinee shows.

And did we mention the onstage rainstorm, technicolor costumes, and show-stopping dance numbers?

Love is Love

The annual love-related holiday isn’t until Tuesday, and Pridefest isn’t until June, but the twain will meet Friday evening at the Y’all Means All Valentines Day Drag Show at Braxton Brewing Co.

Molly Momen will emcee the event in Braxton’s Loft. It’s co-hosted by NKy Pride Center.

Hey, love is love in The Cov, no matter who that might be.
