Hocus Pocus & worldly wines

COVINGTON, Ky. – From here until Nov. 1, expect to find the words “witch,” “ghost,” or “ghoul” at least once in this weekly feature (and we would be disappointed if that WEREN’T the case).

Other words will also appear with great frequency – like “beer,” “wine,” band names that we’re not convinced are actually words, and “author.” But as semantics go, October is a fun month.

Scroll through and see which words catch your eye, then plan your weekend accordingly.

Kentucky royalty

Put aside your family squabbles (at least for this month).

October is Family History Month and, author M. Elaine Sutherland Panagiotopoulos will be spilling stories on her family (sort of) tonight at the Kenton County Public Library in Covington.

Panagiotopoulos took inspiration from her own family to write a book called “Royalty of Kentucky.” It’s a novel about Della Moore Carpenter, who dared to defy the rules and expectations of women in early 20th century Kentucky, and she’ll be sharing that story at the library’s Local Author Visit.

A bewitching trio

“Unfaithful lover long since dead. Deep asleep in they wormy bed. Wiggle thy toes, open thine eyes, twist thy fingers toward the sky. Life is sweet, be not shy. On thy feet. So sayeth I.”

Winifred Sanderson sure had a way with a spell.

Is it really even October if you haven’t watched “Hocus Pocus” yet?

Tonight’s your chance to spend the evening watching the accidental awaking of Winifred, Sarah, and Mary Sanderson three centuries after they were wrongly executed for witchcraft, when “Hocus Pocus” at Covington Plaza plays on a screen beneath a cool autumn sky on the riverfront.

The social outdoor film series is presented by NightLight 513, and there will be plenty of good local brews (in a bottle, not a cauldron) and bites.

A picture is worth …

Baker Hunt Art and Cultural Center presents Fotofocus – Ryan Hill - “A Thousand Words ..." on Friday, an exhibition highlighting the local artist’s work.

The exhibition celebrates lens-based art and will feature more than a dozen of Hill’s new pieces in Baker Hunt’s historic ballroom.

The exhibit will challenge perspectives, exploring the role that individual choices play in land development, art and music festivals, and consumerism.

Worldly wines

The 2nd annual Village Winefest at MainStrasse Village’s 6th St. Promenade happens Saturday, and you will find yourself happily choosing from an eclectic mix of more than 75 domestic and international wines to taste. (And maybe fall in love with).

Lots of cool local vendors are going to be participating too, so plan to sip, stroll, and check out the goods from businesses like Scarlet Begonia’s Flower Truck, Golden Gelato, Glory Hole Glassworks, Laughing Bees Honey, The Flying Cat, Del Gardo’s Cannoli, and more.

NKY Pride Community Awards

We realize that all we’d have to do to pack the house – or, in this case, The Carnegie – for the annual NKY Pride 2022 Community Awards on Sunday is point out that Ron Padgett is hosting the event.

Well, Ron Padgett is hosting this annual celebration of some terrific people and businesses whose outstanding work has real impact on LGBTQ+ lives in Northern Kentucky.

Award categories include Champion of LGBTQ+ Fairness, LGBTQ+ Community Activist, LGBTQ+ Inclusive Business or Workplace, LGBTQ+ Education Leader, LGBTQ+ Ally, LGBTQ+ Artist, and LGBTQ+ Youth Activist.

That so many wonderful folks were nominated for these awards shouldn’t be a surprise. After all, the LBGTQ+ community is a meaningful part of the fabric here in The Cov. We’re not going to spoil it and give away the names. But this is definitely an event not to be missed.

For those who’ve been around awhile, you know that way back in 2003, Covington was one of the first Kentucky cities to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, resort, and amusement – and that City leaders have been advocating strongly in this area ever since.

Inclusivity is the right and smart thing to do. Now, go celebrate it on Sunday.
