Bubs Fest, student art & ‘Yonder’

COVINGTON, Ky. – The weekend begins tonight with a proper Ladies Night at Crafts & Vines and Covington Parks & Rec’s Outdoor Movie Night, so don’t speed scroll below or you might miss the details.

Plus, there’s lots of other good stuff you won’t want to miss, like Covington Street Hockey League’s Bubfest (talk about letting good times roll) … a chance to see work from talented student artists … and a seriously talented local outdoors writer who’s going to talk about his new book.

And of course there are art walks, jewelry classes, brunches, good music, and more.

‘Party here, party there …’

“Oh yes, it’s Ladies Night and the feeling’s right” … for candle making, jewelry shopping, and wine sippin’.

Crafts & Vines Ladies Night! Candle Making Class & MAVI Jewelry Showcasing will guide you through the process of making your own candle with some pretty swank Doterra Essential Oils. (Lead with the nose on this scented candle-making journey).

While that wax is setting, shop handmade jewelry that has its roots in Venezuela, where two sisters dreamed up sweet designs with exotic pears and semi-precious gemstones.

Price of ticket includes wine and everything you need to make an 8 oz. scented candle.

Lawn chairs and popcorn

Grab your blanket, pop some popcorn, and take yourself and your kiddos to Hands Pike Park for Parks & Recreation’s Outdoor Movie Night.

Tonight’s feature flick is “The Boss Baby, Family Business,” and it’s about a stay-at-home Dad and his big-shot CEO brother who are transformed into babies for 48 hours. As one might expect, there’s an evil genius involved, with an evil plot that must be thwarted.

Meanwhile, grab your flock and get to the park early so you can play cornhole and Connect Four and take a sneak peak through Parks & Rec’s new telescope.

Soft serve & strollin’

The Public Arts Network of NKY’s Art & Ice Cream Art Walk through MainStrasse Village on Friday sounds like the kind of event that inspired George Seurat to paint “A Sunday on La Grande Jatte.”

Starting at Piper’s Café and Ice Cream Bar, you can choose from hundreds of soft-serve ice cream flavors and stroll through MainStrasse Village, discovering clever art, cool shops, and trend-setting bars and restaurants.

The tour itself is free (you pay only for the tasty ice cream).

Embellish your wrist

If you’d rather design your own baubles than shop for them, here’s your chance to get instruction on creating your own jewelry.

With Swarovski crystal accents and metal embellishments, a local artisan from Helfrich Creations will teach you how to make your own bracelet at Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop’s Bracelet Design class on Saturday.

There’s a cost, but all materials and tools are provided.

‘The Greatest Show on Wheelz’

If we could add a soundtrack to a Weekend in Love The Cov event, we’d probably queue up Sprach Zarathustra to announce the Bubs Fest Wheelz Cup 4 on Saturday at Barb Cook Park. (Now that we’ve mentioned that Richard Strauss masterpiece, perhaps you’ll hear it play out in your head through power of suggestion as you read about this event).

Bubsfest is the biggest Covington Street Hockey League tournament to date, and they want you to bring the friends and family because there’s gonna be a whole lotta fun happenin’.

First, there will be street hockey – good street hockey.  And as if watching these wizards on wheels do their magic weren’t enough, they’ve got Bircus in on the act (literally) with circus acts … a kids hockey showcase … live music by The Mimics … (beer) trucks from Braxton, Bircus, and West 6th … food provided by JTM (and it’s free for the kiddos) … a bounce house .. giant pong .. a dunk tank (invite your boss!) … mini games … and a live DJ.

The Bubs will also be placing the Kyle Wheeler memorial stone during their opening ceremony to commemorate the life of their beloved teammate and his dedication to the game.

Brunch & wobble

We’re not suggesting that you eat so much that you wobble out of a restaurant, we’re simply referring to Bluegrass Brunch at Pandemonium with Skip, Hop, & Wobble (the band) on Sunday (though the food will be so good that self-restraint will be a challenge).

Kealoha’s Kitchen is cooking up a delicious brunch, Jeff is gonna be behind the bar with those flame-out-your-ears Carolina Reaper Bloody Marys and Skip, Hop & Wobble (Rockne Riddlebarger and Don Anderson) are going to play tunes.

From student to exhibitor

You ever drive by Baker Hunt Art and Cultural Center and long to quietly sit in the garden and ponder the masterpieces you might create if you would just make the time to enroll in one of their classes?

Maybe you become paralyzed by choice. The charcoal or colored pencil class? Pastels or watercolors? Or what about ink? Or illustration markers? Mosaics or sculpting? Maybe you’d like to crochet a blanket? Odds are they can teach whatever you’d like to learn.

On Sunday, the folks who actually made the time to study with a Baker Hunt instructor will have their work on display at Baker Hunts beautiful campus. The Baker Hunt Student Art Show is not to be missed. (And just maybe it will motivate you to create something too).

That ‘Yonder’ beauty

Local author Ron Ellis will tell you that his new book “Yonder” is a collection of new and selected stories that he’s gathered over many seasons from time spent in the woods and on the waters with his friends. That’s a humble description. Ellis studied under noted environmentalist and writer Rick Bass. He’s the real deal.

Author Robert DeMott describes the essence of “Yonder” this way: “A slice of paradise, Ron suggests, is within our grasp because the yonder toward which we journey is never that far away if only we look properly. Even our own backyard postage stamp of ponds or fields can be yonder, too, in the right frame of mind. The best part is that like Ron you don’t necessarily have to travel long distances to find that place.”

On Sunday, the Ron Ellis Book Signing at Behringer-Crawford Museum is not to be missed. Ellis will share some of his stories and would surely welcome  a conversation about your “yonder.”
