The ‘Upside Down,’ ‘RENT’ & puppies

COVINGTON, Ky. – Happy National Mac & Cheese Day. Whether you celebrate with the gluten version or that chickpea version, just be sure to enjoy a big ol’ bowl of comfort today. And if you scroll down, you’ll see a place where you can go do just that.

But first, there are a couple of cool events tonight that top our list of cool stuff to do in The Cov, so don’t scroll too fast. One involves “Stranger Things” and cats. The other event is all about sipping while you shop.

Eclectic stuff, you know.

And if you over-celebrate Mac & Cheese Day, well, just walk off those calories and carbs by doing all the fun stuff in The Cov. This is a guilt-free weekend.

Vecna, Eleven, kittens (but no Eddie!)

To be honest, we’re still mourning the death of our favorite metalhead, Eddie Munson. Seriously, Duffer Brothers? Eddie had to die? Vecna’s creepy Demobats just had to do him in?

We’re hopeful that Eddie’s arc is not finished, and that he’s resurrected next season. (You can 100% do this Duffer Brothers. Make. It. Happen.).

In the meantime, there are kittens. We can hold them while we weep, stroke their soft fur, and whisper in their pointed little ears about that awful choice by the creative-powers-that-be about Eddie’s existence.

Stranger Things Trivia Night with Kitties happens tonight at Purrfect Day Cat Café. Trivia will cover all four seasons (before there was ever even an Eddie to kill off!). Step through the portal, enter the Upside Down. The choice whether to return is yours.

Thrift & sip

You know that cool little pop-up vintage shop at 2 W. Pike St.? Well, they’re hosting a Thrift & Sip tonight, and you should go if you want some really cool clothes and a refreshing libation.

Peruse the racks at Peachy and Vintage and we bet you’ll find a fine selection of buttery soft flannel shirts, smart cardigans, and vintage treasures.

Art with markers

Those wonderful, colorful markers. Remember how fun it was as a kid to get your hands on some? And the thrill of the permanence of those hues on whatever surface you chose as your canvas. (Which, in your tender years could have been a bedroom wall or newly re-upholstered sofa).

You can still experience the joy of markers but at an elevated level because Baker Hunt Art and Cultural Center will show you how to use artist-grade markers at its Introduction to Markers class on Friday.

You’ll learn to blend and overlap colors to create texture, dimension, and mixed colors and stretch the limits of your marker art-making creativity.

Paint the courts

On Saturday, head to Randolph Park’s basketball courts on the south end of the park and help give them a new coat of paint.

We’re talking bright colors.

Paint the Courts starts at 9 a.m., so eat a healthy breakfast and channel your inner Picasso or Van Gogh.

525,600 minutes

How do you measure the wait for a musical? In daylights? In sunsets? In midnights? In cups of coffee?

All we know is the wait is over because RENT opens on Saturday at The Carnegie. And in case you’ve been in the Upside Down and know nothing about RENT, here’s trivia worth noting:

It’s loosely based on the plot and characters of the opera, “La Boheme.” The show was ahead of its time by celebrating diversity among the cast, which portrayed characters who were black, white, brown, straight, gay, bisexual, and transgender. Creator Jonathan Larson died the night before the show was scheduled to premiere Off-Broadway. (And you can watch that with Andrew Garfield’s exceptional performance in “tick, tick … Boom.” RENT is the 10th longest running Broadway show.

The takeaway from all of that: You won’t want to miss this show.

Pups, pours & pools

Truth be told, when you walk through the door at the end of a workday, your dog acts like it’s the second coming of Christ, right? Your cat, meanwhile, with unspoken disdain, manages to convey, “Oh, it’s you.”

So, why not reward that faithful jubilant friend of yours with a day out that’s all about him or her? Wouldn’t they enjoy a fancy outing where they can get dolled up with a fancy scarf or harness, maybe a canine chapeau that hooks over their perky ears?

On Sunday, Coppin’s at Hotel Covington is hosting an afternoon of canine fun (and adult relaxation) with their second Pups & Pours event.

It will be a “paw-sitively” exciting afternoon where you can relax with a seasonal libation and play with your dog at the pool stations set up in the courtyard. Reservations are suggested but not required.
