Goonies, Jimmy B & a 7th St. stage

COVINGTON, Ky. – The theme of the weekend is “cult,” as in cult classics, cult followings, cult-like adoration …

How else to describe our undying fascination with Sloth and his buddies, the crooner-behind “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” endless varieties of craft beer, and The March King.

Read on for details.

Outdoor music & beer

If your idea of paradise is cold beer and live music, then prepare for your heavenly ascent.

The Paradise Music & Beer Festival 2022 kicks off Friday on 7th Street, right outside of Braxton Brewing Company, as well as within. Stringus Kahn opens with an acoustic set and there’s a proper meet n’ greet too.

From there, you’ll enter a weekend of the toe-tappin’ sounds of the Infamous Stringdusters, Ripe, Magic Beans, and more. Plus, there are after-parties for this two-day event that you’ll want to check out over at Madison Theater.

Admission is FREE, as one would expect of entry to paradise.

Get your ‘Goonies’ fix

An old doubloon, a treasure map, some scrappy kids, and home foreclosures.

And there you have the timeless appeal of The Goonies, which first graced theater screens in 1985 and continued on to VHSs, DVDs, and now streaming services … because we simply do not tire of this film.

On Friday, The Goonies hits the big screen again, this time at Covington Parks & Rec’s Outdoor Movie Night at Devou Park.

So, grab your blankets, lawn chairs, and popcorn and get ready to watch a bunch of kids navigate their way through outrageous booby-traps, a mild-mannered monster, some bumbling bad guys, and a long-lost pirate ship to save the day and keep their homes.

… last shaker of salt

Parrotheads unite … and make your way to the Frosthaus on Saturday for its Margaritaville Party.

The idea is to get you ready for the Jimmy Buffett concert next week at Riverbend, so the good folks at Frosthaus are going to have DJ Coco and The Klabberheads play his music to get you into that easy, laid-back Margaritaville mood.

Plus, they’ll have tasty new flavors churning in their machines and giant margaritas by way of refreshments.

And don't worry, come Monday, it'll be all right ...

Back in the bandshell

Leave it to the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra to fashion an entire concert featuring the pomp and pageantry of marches.

You know ... the songs that play when a bride sets off down an aisle, or when innocent lives march into battle (anyone else see a connection there?) or the strong, repetitive rhythm that plays, sometimes over and over, depending on the size of the graduating class that’s parading into a gymnasium to receive their diplomas.

You’ll likely hear every musical march known to stage, screen, wedding, charge to battle, and graduation performed on Saturday at KSO’s Marches Madness at Devou Park.

This is the KSO’s 28th season of outdoor concerts at Devou’s bandshell, and there is no end to its ability to keep finding fascinating, quirky, innovative ways to get folks to the symphony.

Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and find yourself spot to perch on the hillside. The beautiful night sky, the verdant surroundings, and sweet sounds of the KSO, they’re all FREE.
