Yoga, hippos, & 4th of July

COVINGTON, Ky. – Quite frankly, this weekend’s activities seem to lend themselves to a more relaxed, creative, Zen version of you.

We’re betting, however, that the life-size Hungry Hungry Hippo game on Sunday at Covington Yard will get you moving. And remember, City pools are open so maybe you get in a few dozen laps, cool off, get splashed by kids, get your vitamin D back up to a healthy level.

But easy weekends are welcome, right? Come Monday, after all, you’ll be busy celebrating the Fourth of July, eating too many hot dogs, watching the parade in Peaselburg, and later gazing at fireworks that will likely be going off all around us and lighting up the evening sky.

Stretch your stress away

Turn off the television. Stop checking your phone. Unfurrow that brow and get yourself up to Devou Park’s Rotary Grove this evening for Kenton County Public Library’s free Yoga in the Park Series.

Move. Feel your breath (yes, feel it). And reduce your stress. Relax your body and mind in the verdant green surroundings of Devou Park.

A collection of library materials will be available for you to check out too.

Tonight’s tune-up

Yes, it might be a slow, easy weekend, but it won’t be a drag. Wait! It will, but we think you’ll agree that it’s the best kind of “drag.”

We’re talking about tonight’s show featuring Queen Danicure, The Lady Phaedra, and Maya Motions-Decay at The Standard. Pull in and, as they say, “ring the bell for full-service fun.”

Oh, and The Bard will be strumming sweet acoustic tunes. Showtime is at 8 p.m.

If you can’t grow ’em, paint ’em

Ah, sunflowers. Those bright, sunny big-as-your-head blooms. Who doesn’t love a big ol’ bouquet of sunshine? Place a fistful of them in a well-worn, faded crock and your home is suddenly a charming cottage in Provence.

But ever try to grow them? It can be a constant battle between you and the varmints who are certain those big yellow blooms are a delicacy planted solely for their dining pleasure.

Instead, why not learn to paint a big golden sunflower to brighten your wall? You can achieve this opportunity to channel Van Gogh at Baker Hunt Art and Cultural Center’s Anyone Can Paint! A Sunflower on Friday. They’ll walk you step by step and even provide a template to ensure your success.

Weaving wire

Sometimes weekends call for quietly sitting around and wrapping wire around a stone, because, yes, some weeks have been that taxing on the soul.

On Saturday, local artist Sandy Zureick will be at Purple Paisley, Local Artisan Shop to teach you how to wrap a beautiful stone and create a unique pendant for yourself in her Flat Stone Wire Wrap Class.

If time permits, Zureick will also demonstrate the cool technique of wire weaving.

Preppin’ for the 4th

There will be plenty of fun at Covington Yard’s Pre 4th of July Party on Sunday. They’ll have lounge pools (first come, first serve) … a Hangry Omar’s slider-eating contest … and a life-size Hungry Hungry Hippos game.

Just like that classic board game (just enlarged) the idea is to make a mad dash to the center of the board and grab as many balls in your big Hungry Hippo mouth as possible.

(Our own helpful hint: You might not want to participate if you just won that slider-eating contest.)

Peaselburg parade

#Weekend In Love The Cov generally only includes events up through Sunday, but we wouldn’t want you to miss out on Fourth of July festivities on Monday.

The Friends of Peaselburg Neighborhood Independence Day Parade on the 4th welcomes all Covington residents and neighborhood associations, businesses, organizations, to join in the celebration. Show up at the St. Augustine schoolyard by 10:30 a.m. if you want to be part of the parade, otherwise show up on the parade route by 11 a.m., ready to catch candy and cheer on the participants.
