‘Bottled-in-Bond’ & burlesque

COVINGTON, Ky. – Your weekend in The Cov can begin and end with some fascinating history lessons.

The weekend’s calendar is book-ended with a bit of bourbon history tonight (with an interesting Covington connection) and burlesque history on Sunday. Each are equally fascinating and involve a good time to be had by all who participate.

There’s plenty of fun things to do in between too, such as an engaging event featuring leading LGBTQ+ voices in our region … a cool exhibit that marries creativity and science … and a chili cook-off. Of course there’s live music, as always, and more.

Bottled-in-Bond Day

If it weren’t for Covington’s John G. Carlisle, you’d likely have iodine, tobacco, and paint thinner swirling in your bourbon.

Carlisle, who served as Speaker of the House, Secretary of the Treasury, and a U.S. Senator, was a force behind the passage of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 (one of the first consumer protection acts in American history, no less). Up to that point, bourbon distillers were free to put all range of substances (like the above mentioned) in their spirits for the sake of color and flavor.

To celebrate this significant day in the history of sipping, there’s a special event at Smoke Justis this evening because March 3 is nationally known as Bottled-in-Bond Day.

The John G. Carlisle Bottled-in-Bond Competition and Celebration includes a four-course food experience, four blind pours, and a guided tasting of some of the finest Bottled-in-Bond varietals in the U.S.

Some history with your fun, eh? More HERE. But hurry.

‘The Power of Her’

It’s a mix and mingle with the mighty – the committed female and female-identified individuals who do the work to push equality forward for the LGBTQ+ community.

“The Power of Her” at The Carnegie on Friday will spotlight the work of Drag King Alex Cameron. … Cincinnati Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney. …The Cov’s own Dr. Bonnie Meyer, who chairs the NKY Pride Center … and WLWT anchor Megan Mitchell.

The Human Rights Campaign Cincinnati is the event sponsor.

Be sure to bring your vaccine card as all guests must be vaccinated. And HRC encourages you to wear a mask when not eating or drinking or when 6 feet of social distance cannot be maintained. Details HERE.

Fresh everything

Your favorite local farmers and artisans will be at 3rd and Greenup Streets in Roebling Point early Saturday morning with nutritious, locally grown foods to make sure you’re eating well.

Rain or shine, vendors show up with seasonal produce, meats, eggs, honey, jams, pickles, baked goods, and all range of fine products.

If you can’t show up in person, you can pre-order a Farmers Market Bundle for pick-up. Just place your order by noon Friday and you can pick it up at 3rd and Greenup on Saturday. Details HERE.

‘Science in Play’

The Kentucky Science Center’s “Science in Play2Go” exhibit at the Kenton County Library’s Covington Branch on Saturday says it’s for children ages 8 and under, but we can’t imagine that grown-ups wouldn’t have fun watching kids do cool stuff while learning STEAM skills.

The exhibit is built around the ideas that open-ended play and “loose parts” (which are materials that can be reimagined in endless ways) are both fun and educational.

Who wouldn’t want to build their own roller coaster? Or engineer their own world with big blocks? Details HERE.

Chili time again

Crafts and Vines brings back its annual Chili Cook Off! on Sunday and it’s teaming up with Wooden Cask Brewing Company.

Just register in person, by phone, or by email, then show up with six quarts of your finest batch of chili in a crockpot along with serving utensils. Crafts and Vines will provide tables, electricity, and a pint of beer for you.

As for the tasters/testers? $10 gets you a 2 oz. taste of each chili, a vote for your favorite chili, and a pint of Wooden Cask beer. Plus, you can buy a cup of chili after judging. Details HERE.

Begin your burlesque journey

If you’ve ever entertained the idea of starting a new chapter, or just a side gig, here’s your chance to make it happen.

The Burlesque Workshop at Pandemonium on Sunday will begin with a brief tutorial on Burlesque’s history before diving in to how you can set out on your own burlesque journey.

“Burlesque on a Budget” focuses on costume concepts, thrifting, and maintenance. “Learning the Moves” teaches the basic moves, prop manipulation (dare we imagine?!), and how to employ your costume as “the show” itself. What are you waiting for? Details HERE.
