As the river rises, crews ‘plug’ the floodwall

COVINGTON, Ky. – It’s all hands on deck as a City of Covington Public Works crew began assembling the floodgate at Madison (Avenue) Overlook at 8 a.m. this morning.

Crews prepped the area yesterday, cleaning out footer holes for the gate’s anchors to be installed today. This morning, a crane began lifting the first of the many metal pieces into place.

The effort to keep out the rising river also includes a lot of behind-the-scenes work.

“I’ve got another crew at the shop filling sandbags,” Parks & Facilities Supervisor Brad Schwenke said. “It takes 660 sandbags to put on the back side of this. I had six guys filling sandbags yesterday and they filled a truckload.”

Schwenke said he expected to have the floodgate installed by 1 p.m. today.

“It’s kind of a team-building exercise in a way, as you work with different groups,” Schwenke said. “This group is great.”
