‘Fresh’ faces, energy sought for 3 City boards

Covington needs to fill a vacancy on the board that oversees the Housing Authority of Covington’s various sites, including the 235-unit Latonia Terrace on Madison Pike.

COVINGTON, Ky. - Do you enjoy studying the nuances and legalities of zoning? Would you like to help guide development in Covington? Do you believe in the obligation of local government to help provide affordable housing? Do you love the incredible attractions of the City-owned Devou Park?

If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” and you’re passionate about these topics and aren’t afraid of hard work, then the City of Covington might be looking for you.

The City needs to fill vacancies on three separate boards that help make the community a stronger place.
  • The five-member Board of Adjustment ensures flexibility in the City’s zoning code by making decision on requests for zoning variances, conditional use permits, changes to non-conforming use structures, and appeals of rulings by the City’s Zoning Administrator. In essence, the board helps guide development in a City with many historic buildings. This is a four-year term. The Board typically meets at 5:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month at City Hall.
  • The five-member Housing Authority of Covington board of commissioners oversees the operations and budget of publicly subsidized housing sites in the City, including the Latonia Terrace and City Heights family sites, the Golden Towers community for senior citizens, and various scattered-site complexes. This appointment is to fill out the remainder of a four-year term that expires June 30, 2022. The board typically meets at 4:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month at the HAC office at 2300 Madison Ave.
  • The 12-member Devou Park Advisory Committee (DPAC) is a community advisory board charged with making recommendations to the Covington City Commission about park infrastructure, maintenance in the 700-plus-acre green space that includes a golf course, a small lake, bike trails, hiking trails, a museum and a lot of woods. This is a three-year term. DPAC meets monthly at the Devou Golf and Event Center, typically at 6:45 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month.
Covington Mayor Joe Meyer said the City has long been fortunate to have dedicated community members who serve on its various boards and commissions.

“But we’re especially interested in some new faces so we can benefit from fresh ideas, perspectives and insights,” Meyer said. “These are three vitally important panels which in the coming years will be facing some big challenges and/or opportunities. The City, for example, is rewriting its Zoning Ordinance. We don’t want to do things the way we’ve always done them, and so we’re seeking some new energy, enthusiasm, backgrounds, and intellects.”

The City is looking to fill the vacancies quickly, so if you’re interested, apply now, the Mayor said. You can apply online or print out an application and return it to the City. Both options are available on the City’s Boards & Commission page, HERE.
