Covington seeks revenue manager, engineer

COVINGTON, Ky. - The City of Covington is seeking qualified applicants to fill key positions in its Finance and Public Works departments.

One position, revenue-collections manager, would report directly to the Finance Director and oversee the collection of all payroll, net profit and insurance premium tax returns, including accounting and auditing responsibilities.

"This person fulfills a critical function for the City," said Covington's new Finance Director, Muhammed Owusu. "We need to make sure that we collect every nickel legally due the City, because this is how we invest in services and programs for residents."

The move to fill the position is in reaction to a recent retirement and some reorganizing within the Finance Department to better fulfill its functions, Owusu said. By helping to separate the revenue collection and expenditure functions of the department, the position also helps the City fix a weakness identified in its last audit.

Owusu explained the position's duties and the need to hire someone to the Covington City Commission last Tuesday. An order fine-tuning the job description is on the consent agenda for this coming Tuesday, May 22.

The job was posted May 8 but the City has extended the deadline from May 22 to June 1 to give applicants more time to apply.

City Manager David Johnston said Covington is committed to using the work of auditors to improve its Finance Department, and part of that effort includes hiring highly qualified people who understand the dedication that comes with public work.

The second position is for a project engineer in the Public Works Department.

The engineer would report to interim Director Rick Davis and provide technical assistance and engineering expertise for various functions in the department related to construction, public right of way, capital projects, change orders and development proposals, as well as operational and capital budgets.

The deadline for applications is also June 1.

"Come join our team," Johnston said. "We're doing some exciting things in the City, and we need help to accelerate our efforts."
