City Issues 501 Main Project Update; Construction to Begin October 16

COVINGTON, KY – The City of Covington has issued an update regarding the 501 Main project and its construction schedule.

Starting Monday, October 16, exterior garage construction is scheduled to begin in the 501 Main parking lot (please see maps below). As a result, the 501 Main Parking Mitigation plan will officially be in effect.

The 501 Main Parking Mitigation plan includes the following parking options:

  • The IRS lot will become available in the evenings and on weekends for free parking.
    • The IRS lot will be open to the public Monday through Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. and open to the public all day Saturday & Sunday.
    • Cars will not be allowed to be left over night during the week.
    • The IRS lot is located at 4th Street & Johnson Street.
  • The Designs Direct lot will become available for $5.
    • The Designs Direct lot is open to the public Fridays from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Saturdays 5 p.m. to 12 a.m. Payment will be accepted until 9 p.m.
    • The Designs Direct lot is located at 605 Philadelphia Street.
  • Valet parking will be available for $3 rather than $5.
    • Valet parking is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday beginning at 5 p.m.
    • Valet parking is located at 6th Street & Main Street.
  • One way changes on 7th and 8th Streets will be made and parking will be allowed on both sides of the street.

The City encourages MainStrasse business owners and employees to park further away to keep prime parking locations open for customers.

Additionally, starting on Monday, October 23, a portion of the 501 Main lot behind 410-424 6th Street will be blocked off. As a result, free daytime parking will be made available in the John R. Green lot (please see map below). Philadelphia Street between 7th and 9th Streets will also become one way.

In June 2017, the Covington Board of Commissioners authorized the 501 Main Parking Mitigation plan. The plan was developed in an effort to accommodate parking throughout the duration of the 501 Main development construction period and to help alleviate parking issues experienced in MainStrasse.

The 501 Main Parking Mitigation Plan will be in effect throughout the duration of the construction period. Once completed, a permanent parking plan will be implemented for the MainStrasse neighborhood.

Signage will be installed to help direct visitors to available parking lots and to the valet stand.  Printed material will also be developed for the businesses to hand out to their patrons.

The 501 Main project is titled “RiverHaus” and is a high-end, residential development including 187 one- and two-bedroom units along with commercial space on the ground floor, and a parking garage.
