Ugly sweaters & goat yoga

COVINGTON, Ky.- Christmas is less than two weeks away, and it’s dominating the scene all weekend in #LoveTheCov, with bar crawls in ugly sweaters, a visit or two from Santa, a couple of opportunities to break a holiday sweat, and plenty of craft making.

(But if you need a break from “ho ho ho,” there’s boxing, a book fair, a bourbon launch party et al.)

Ugly sweaters

Like naked (aka hairless) mole rats and fruitcake, Christmas sweaters have a cult following. But even if you’re not one of those people, you likely have saved one back just for weekends like this, where that corny knit “thing” is the ticket to fun:
  • Ugly Holiday Sweater Yoga happens Friday night at Sage Yoga Co. We’re assuming you can’t tear that thing off halfway through the session. Info,HERE.
  • The 2ndAnnual Ugly Sweater & Reindeer Games Covington Pub Crawl begins at The Hannaford at 7 p.m. Saturday, then proceeds throughout a couple-block area. You know what to do: Dig out that sweater, ownit, and compete for prizes. Schedule,HERE.

Burning the calories

Tis the season for holiday luncheons and end-of-the-year receptions and eggnog and gingerbread cookies and candy canes and ... well ... you know where this is headed: Feeling like you probably couldn’t fit into even the jolliest Santa’s suit, looking like Frosty the Snowman with an extra round base.
Trim down some of the extra tinsel:
  • YoGoat (yes, yoga with goats) comes to CoreStrong on Saturday. (If you go, email us and explain how this works - but it sounds fun). There are two sessions, but they’re filling fast. Info,HERE.
  • Is running your thing? Then head down to Jingle Bell Run Cincinati. Don a holiday-themed costume, tie jingle bells to your shoelaces, wear a sweater or a Santa hat (you get the picture), and run that 5K through the streets of Covington and Cincinnati. It starts Saturday morning at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center. Info,HERE.

Just like Santa’s workshop

Feeling crafty? Make like one of Santa’s elves at the North Pool Sweat Shop and make your own presents:
  • Make your own Christmas sign board on Sunday using chalk paste and silk screen stencils with Crafts & Vines,HERE.
  • Make holiday-themed earrings Saturday at Purple Paisley, Location Artisan Shop,HERE.
  • Or preserve, mount and display a moth or butterfly at Hail Dark Aesthetics on Sunday evening,HERE.

A subtle lesson

And if you want a little dose of solemnity amid the jovial nature, teach your kids some important lessons in a subtle way with the Racial Justice Film Series, featuring the family friendly “Zootopia.”

As the organizers (the N.Ky. Chapter of Kentuckians for the Commonwealth) point out: “The film does an excellent job of introducing children to topics of criminal justice concerns (and) how bigotry can hold everyone back, and makes these issues accessible for them to understand.”

Light refreshments follow, on Saturday afternoon at the Kenton County Public Library. Info,HERE.

Kid friendly

Your children driving you nuts? We all know that threatening to call up Santa no longer works. Instead, take them to one or more of these events:
  • This Saturday, come have Breakfast with Santa. Enjoy hot chocolate and holiday crafts at Devou Golf & Event Center. Register,HERE.
  • Or head over to the Behringer-Crawford Museum on Sunday for Holiday Storytime at BCM, where local library staff will read children’s books. (We hear Santa has a habit of stopping in at this weekly event.)Get your tickets,HERE.
  • The legendary Holiday Train Display on Behringer-Crawford Museum,HERE.
  • Or then there’s “Readers’ Theater: A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Admission is free Sunday evening at this theater production at Community of Faith Presbyterian Church,HERE.
