The Historic Preservation Award Program was initiated in 2001 by the Covington Historic Preservation Office to celebrate outstanding efforts to preserve and maintain historic properties throughout the city. Historic Preservation Awards are given annually for projects completed within the previous calendar year. May is the National Historic Preservation month and we take time every May to honor those who have contributed to Historic Preservation in Covington.
Award-winning projects embody the goals of preserving, protecting and celebrating Covington’s historic architecture and unique sense of place.
The seven project categories eligible for Covington Preservation Awards are: Exterior Restoration-Residential, Exterior Restoration-Mixed Use/Commercial, Rehabilitation-Residential, Rehabilitation-Mixed Use/Commercial, Adaptive Re-use, Project Excellence, and Stewardship. Awards will be presented on the basis of the following criteria:
- Project design sensitivity to the historic character and fabric of the property, and degree of preservation or restoration achieved.
- Project execution representing the best preservation practice and use of appropriate techniques.
- Degree of difficulty of problems or threats faced and the creativity and appropriateness of the solutions applied.
- Impact of leader, program, organization or project on the community and the preservation of the city’s historic resources.
The winners are chosen by City staff and the Urban Design Review Board.
