Description:
Goebel Park offers a public pool, picnic shelters, a gazebo, a playground, and a grill. A walking trail connects this park to the Kenny Shields Park. The park also hosts the Sergeant First Class Jason Bishop Memorial that sits directly across from the house in which Jason grew up.
Goebel Park is best known for it's iconic German-style Carroll Chimes Clock Tower, which displays a charming mechanical puppet show of the Pied Piper on the hour, April through December. The clock tower also boasts a working carillon, which plays every hour as well. Architect Addison Clipson was commissioned to design the tower and worked with partner Bill Batson. Completed in 1979, the tower was named in honor of then Governor of Kentucky, Julian Carroll.
Goebel Park is named in honor of the only Covington native to be elected Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, William Goebel. Goebel had been elected governor of Kentucky under a cloud of suspicion and served as the 34th Governor of Kentucky for only four days in 1900 after having been mortally wounded by an assassin the day before he was sworn in. In May 1909, the City of Covington purchased the Goebel property, which compromised 14 acres at 5th and Philadelphia Streets, for park purposes.
