Description:

Bill Cappel was born on November 12, 1912, in Covington, Kentucky. A standout athlete, he served as captain and second baseman of the 1939 World Champion Covington Boosters—the only team from Kentucky to win a world title in any sport. He graduated in 1927 as part of the first class from Covington Latin School. During World War II, Mr. Cappel earned the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star for his service in the U.S. Army. A lifelong contributor to local sports, he managed the old Covington Ballpark and served as an umpire, manager, and tournament promoter. He co-founded both the Northern Kentucky Umpires Association and the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
