Historic Building Research Instructions and Worksheets


This helpful document, drafted by the Historic Preservation Office, outlines the general process you can take to research your historic property. This will show you how to use deed research and city directory research and other resources to find out things such as who lived in your property and when the building was constructed. Please note that the City Historic Preservation Office does not conduct primary research for property owners by request, but is available for guidance and queries regarding the process.

The Historic Property Deed worksheet will aid you in doing Property Deed research. Records dating from 1850 to Present are located at the Kenton County Building, 303 Court Street, 1st Floor, Covington, KY 41011. Records dating from 1840 to 1850 area t the Independence Courthouse, 5272 Madison Pike, Independence, KY 41051. Records dating before 1840 can be found at the Alexandria Courthouse, 8330 W. Main St., Alexandria, KY.

The Historic City Directory worksheet will aid you in doing City Directory research. The Covignton City Directory is located at the Kenton county Public Library, in the Genealogy and Kentucky History Section. A City Directory is a historic City record listing of residents, streets, business, organizations or institutions in giving their location within a city.
