Mudslide closes Amsterdam Road

A Covington Public Works crew worked furiously this morning to clear Amsterdam. The crew included, from left: grounds worker Chad Hyland (walking), laborer James Payne (driving the dump truck), and cement brick mason Gene Kohl (operating the mini excavator).

COVINGTON, Ky. - Amsterdam Road in Covington is closed while City of Covington Public Works crews clean up a mudslide.

Public Works Director Rick Davis said the heavy rain overnight saturated the ground, and a large pile of dirt with weeds and brush slid onto the northbound lane of the road near Montague Road.

“Our guys have been out in the rain this morning clearing it away, and we’re going to get the road back open as soon as we can,” Davis said.

But with more rain expected, Davis said it could take a couple of days to finish the job in a way that crews don’t have to come right back to the site.

The National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio, said 5.02 inches of rain fell yesterday, the second-wettest calendar day in local recorded history (out of 53,919 days on record going back to 1871).

The City has set up a detour.
