Covington Celebrates “Make A Difference Day”; Seeks Volunteers for Tree Planting Event

COVINGTON, KY –  The City of Covington is celebrating this year’s “Make A Difference Day” on Saturday, October 28, and seeks volunteers for a tree planting event along Madison Avenue.

Tree planting volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at the Life Learning Center parking lot, 20 W. 18th Street. The event will extend from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

During the event, approximately 40 trees will be planted on both sides of Madison Avenue from 15th Street to 20th Street. Volunteers will be treated to a light breakfast and lunch and tools and supplies will be provided.

The project will directly impact five Covington neighborhoods, specifically through the project’s beautification and canopy expansion coverage efforts. Canopy expansion coverage helps mitigate the effects of a major heat island, improves air quality and storm water absorption in a heavy run-off area, and increases residents’ quality of life and overall pride of place.

When compared to other portions of the city, this section of Madison Avenue has very little canopy coverage, a high heat index, and approximately 85% impervious surface. Additionally, it is a highly trafficked area where air quality can be improved with increased tree canopy coverage.

The tree planting event is made possible thanks to the partnerships of the Covington Urban Forestry Board, Keep Covington Beautiful, the Austinburg Neighborhood Association, and the City of Covington. The event is funded by a grant from Keep America Beautiful and UPS.

“Make A Difference Day” is one of the largest annual single-days of service nationwide. Since 1992, volunteers and communities have come together on “Make A Difference Day” with a single purpose: to improve the lives of others.
