City of Covington Executes Ceremonial Signing of Multi-Year Covington Professional Firefighters, Local Union No. 38 Contract

COVINGTON, KY – On Tuesday evening, Mayor Joseph U. Meyer, Interim City Manager Loren Wolff and Local Union No. 38 Executive Board Members executed the ceremonial signing of the multi-year Covington Professional Firefighters, Local Union No. 38 contract.

Local Union No. 38 Executive Board Members present at the ceremonial signing included President Mike Lee, Vice President Mike Davis, Secretary/Treasurer Tyler Cherry and former Covington Fire Chief and now attorney, Buddy Wheatley. Additionally, Assistant City Manager/City Solicitor Frank Warnock was present at the signing.

On May 11, the Board of Commissioners approved a multi-year working agreement with the Covington Professional Firefighters, Local Union No. 38. The agreement is through the end of 2018.

Contract adjustments include annual wage increases, establishment of wage standards, hours and other conditions of employment, in an effort to add to the City’s competitive edge in recruiting and retaining the highest quality firefighters.

Additionally, the agreement includes a mandate that new hires must be certified paramedics as a condition of employment, the implementation of a new drug testing policy, the addition of anti-discrimination language and the opportunity for firefighters from other agencies to apply for lateral entry into the Covington Fire Department.
