Una Merkel Mural to be Unveiled at Art Off Pike Event

COVINGTON, KY – Austin Dunbar of Durham Brand & Co. has designed a mural to celebrate the Covington native Una Merkel. The mural is located in The Arcade that is located adjacent to Klingenberg Hardware at 26 W. Seventh St. in downtown Covington.

Una Merkel was a famous actress in the 1930’s cinema, and Tony Award winner for Supporting Actress in (The Ponder Heart).

Merkel has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, an historic marker dedicated to her in Covington, and now a mural dedicated in her honor.

The mural is designed to tell the story of Una Merkel. The mural is a collage of images depicting her iconic roles in Hollywood. The classic black and white style of the mural reflects the era in which she appeared on the big screen. The mural celebrates Merkel in her prime and shows what a “Classy Gal” she was, says Dunbar.

The mural was installed the first week of September by muralist Shaylen Broughton, with help from volunteers.

This Mural was organized by local business owner, Jerod Theobald, and funded by anonymous philanthropists CovingTen.

Jerod Theobald stated, "This project wouldn't have been possible without the help of an incredible group of people who have a deep love for Covington, understand the importance of celebrating its history, and are passionate about sharing its story.

“The creation of this tribute to Ms. Merkel was more than just a collaborative effort--it was a community effort.”

The Una Merkel Mural will be unveiled and presented at Renaissance Covington’s Art Off Pike event on Sunday, September 25, 2016.
