Covington to Implement New Program for Collection of Large Trash Items Beginning Oct. 1

COVINGTON, KY – The City of Covington is trying to clean up its curbs and sidewalks.

In an effort to reduce piles of trash at curbsides and encourage more recycling participation, the City will be implementing a new sticker program for residents to dispose of large or extra trash items.

Beginning October 1, residents will be required to place a green sticker on additional bagged trash and large items that don’t fit inside the new City-issued trash carts. The stickers will be mailed out this week with letters to residents.

“We understand that there will be instances when a resident has more trash than what a cart can hold or needs to dispose of items too large to fit inside of a trash cart,” said Sheila Fields, Solid Waste Coordinator.

“We want to make sure there’s a procedure in place that accommodates these situations and is also in line with our efforts to keep Covington clean and green.”

The City is providing each household with 12 stickers per year, which residents should receive this week via mail. Each green sticker allows residents to dispose of one large item or an additional six bags of trash. Residents can purchase additional stickers from the Covington Finance Department.  The City also suggests notifying Rumpke of the additional material or large item by calling 1-877-786-7537.

After October 1, weekly trash collection will be limited to only items placed entirely inside City-issued trash carts and any large or additional items properly placed at the curb with a City-issued green sticker. Large items that do not have a green sticker will not be collected after September 30 and a citation may be issued.

“Households that consistently have more trash than one cart can hold should consider leasing a second trash cart from Rumpke,” Fields said.  “Participating in the City’s recycling program can also reduce trash. Studies show that more than half of what people throw away daily could be recycled.”

Covington offers curbside recycling to all households at no additional cost. Residents who sign up to participate will receive a 65-gallon recycling cart. Recycling is collected every-other-week on the same day as trash. To sign-up for recycling, residents should contact Rumpke at 1-877-786-7537.
