Recreation Department
The Covington Neighborhood, Parks, and Recreation Programs and Maintenance Department oversees the City's recreational facilities which consist of playgrounds, tot lots, passive parks, baseball/softball fields, soccer fields, football fields, outdoor basketball courts, public gardens, memorials, a concert bowl, MainStrasse Bell Tower, picnic shelters, nature trails, modular skate parks, concession stands, spray water park, decorative fountains, swimming pools, a fishing lake, and walking-jogging-biking trails. The Department also has the responsibility for Covington's urban forest.
The City of Covington's greatest recreational jewel is, of course, Devou Park. This 704-acre park has an 18-hole scenic golf course, a fishing lake, a concert bowl, wooden picnic shelter, stone shelter house, a playground, walking-jogging-biking trails, passive areas, overlook viewing area, and many other recreational opportunities. The park is also home to the Behringer-Crawford Museum and the Drees Memorial Pavilion.
Most of Covington's recreational parks primarily serve our neighborhoods. The use of the Bill Cappel Youth Sports Complex, the Spray Water Park, Devou Park, and our swimming pools are used more on a city-wide and regional basis. Total acreage of recreational facilities throughout the city is approximately 1,000 acres, which includes Devou Park.
The Covington Neighborhoods, Parks, and Recreation Department's strongest factor in programming and facility improvements is our continued partnerships. The partnerships with our neighborhood organizations, neighborhood block watch groups, school systems through their superintendents, principals, and teachers, Boys & Girls Clubs, the Kenton County Library, United Way, and the Covington Turners Athletic Club have allowed the Department to develop many exciting after-school and summer programming opportunities for our youth and seniors.
The Covington Recreation Department has developed a very positive relationship with many in the private sector, along with the Kentucky Division of Forestry, the Kentucky Arts Council, the National Park Service, the Northern Kentucky Community Urban Forestry Division, the Kentucky Department of Local Government, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, and the Kenton County Extension Center.
The Recreation Department, through its programming and maintenance department, has developed a very successful recreational activity effort throughout Covington for our citizens.
